A Guide to Best Fishing near Yosemite

Fishing at Bass Lake has been a favorite pastime for generations – and for good reason. Located just minutes from Yosemite National Park, Bass Lake is considered a warm-water lake with average summer temperatures around 76–80°F, making it an ideal year-round destination for anglers of all skill levels. Whether you’re fishing for sport, dinner, or simply enjoying time with family in nature, angling here offers a relaxing and rewarding experience. Many even say fishing has a mindful, almost meditative effect -teaching patience, improving focus, and creating nostalgic memories of learning to cast a line with a parent or grandparent.

Fishing At Bass Lake – Location & History

Bass Lake welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, with nearly half coming specifically for the lake and its water activities. The lake stretches about 4.5 miles long and half a mile wide, with depths reaching nearly 100 feet near the dam.

Originally known as Crane Valley, the area was once a lush meadow inhabited by the Chukchansi and Mono Native American tribes before being transformed into a reservoir in 1901.

Today, Bass Lake is one of the most popular fishing lakes in the Yosemite region. Anglers can expect to find a wide variety of fish including Rainbow Trout, Kokanee Salmon, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Catfish, Crappie, and Bluegill. The lake is stocked regularly by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, making it especially friendly for beginners and families.

Guided Fishing Tours by Yosemite

For those new to fishing or looking to level up their skills, guided fishing trips are a great option. Local guides offer half-day and full-day excursions, providing boats, equipment, and expert knowledge of the best fishing techniques and locations – perfect for first-timers or anyone hoping to reel in a trophy catch.

Annual Bass Lake Fishing Derby

One of the biggest highlights of the fishing season is the Annual Bass Lake Fishing Derby, held each spring before the water warms up. This long-standing community tradition attracts anglers from all over California and offers thousands of dollars in cash prizes for tagged fish. Whether you’re competing seriously or just fishing for fun, the Derby is a fantastic way to experience the excitement and camaraderie of the local fishing scene.

Best Fishing Spots at Bass Lake

Some of the best fishing spots include deeper areas near the dam:

  • Wishon Boat Ramp
  • Miller’s Landing
  • Fawn Point

These spots are ideal for Kokanee and trout, especially when using downriggers.

The jet ski area near the dam, where submerged trees remain, is another hot spot for Kokanee. Shallower waters near The Pines Resort and along the shoreline between the Sheriff’s Tower and Fawn Point are excellent for bass and panfish.

Before heading out, stop by The Pines Market, conveniently located at The Pines Resort, where you’ll find everything you need – from fishing licenses and bait to rods, tackle, snacks, and drinks. And don’t forget to start early: before 8 a.m., a 5 mph speed limit keeps the lake calm, creating ideal conditions for shoreline and shallow fishing. Whether guided, competitive, or DIY, Bass Lake offers unforgettable fishing experiences in a stunning Yosemite setting.
